Year of The Dog

We're celebrating The Year of the Dog with multiple cultural events throughout the resort. May the Year of the Dog bring you luck and prosperity.

2018 Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is the most significant holiday on the calendar. The dates for Lunar New Year vary each year as it is based on the lunar calendar. It normally falls between January 21 and February 20. This year, it will be celebrated on February 16.

2018 is the Year of the Dog. The Chinese zodiac moves in a 12-year cycle, which means those born in 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, and 2018 are also known as Dogs. According to the Asian astrology, your year of birth and the animal determines a lot about your personality traits. Strengths of people born in the year of the dog are courage, loyalty, and persistence. Apart from being a time to feast and reunite with family, the festivities are accompanied by a large array of customs and rituals. Here is a quick introduction to some of the most significant Lunar New Year traditions.

Lion and Dragon Dances

This colorful traditional dance, which is said to bring good luck, is performed outdoors to the accompaniment of drums and cymbals, sometimes as a street parade. Dragon dances are performed by a troupe of acrobatic dancers, whereas lion dances are performed by just two dancers.

You can always tell when Lunar New Year is around the corner because of the festive scarlet decor adorning every street, storefront and home. The color red is ubiquitous, because it is associated with wealth and good fortune in Chinese culture. Red lanterns are hung on the streets, while windows and doors are decorated with posters and papers bearing auspicious characters or phrases. Chinese knots, potted kumquats and golden orange trees are also common.
